'I do this sport because I love it. I love the daily grind of trying to be my best with the body that I’ve been given. I love riding the highs and lows of sport and continuing to believe that I can still get better. But most of all, I love how sport brings us together.' Lauren Brandon

Lauren's Story

When I met my husband, back then boyfriend, at university, he was a professional triathlete. I didn't know much about triathlons at the time and went to watch him race in 2004.

I was so impressed by everyone out there racing and I knew when I finished my swim career that I wanted to do a triathlon as well.2009 was my first triathlon and I have been hooked ever since! I started out in short course ITU racing, but then switched to long course in 2016 when I did my first Ironman and have continued to focus on long distance since.

GREATEST CHALLENGES:
My biggest challenge has definitely been trying to stay healthy. I have had one thing after another, but finally seem to be in a good place and training has been going well. I am hoping that this can continue because I am ready to have a great year!

SEASON GOALS:
Honestly, I just want to race closer to where I believe that I should be and used to be. It has been a rocky few years, so I want to stay healthy, train consistently, and I think that results will come.

KEY RESULTS:
2019 Ironman Boulder Champion and record holder.

STRONGEST DISCIPLINE:
The swim.

TOP 3 SWIM TIPS FOR SOMEONE GETTING STARTED IN TRIATHLON:

  • Get a coach: whether this is a Masters swim group or individual coaching session it will help you will technique and you will progress more quickly then trying to learn how to swim on your own. And it's more fun with other people!

  • Any time in the water is better than none. Especially if you are just getting started, swimming for 10-15 minutes a few days a week, is better than one or two longer sessions. You can still get in some good work in a short amount of time.

  • Train for the conditions: If you are planning on doing a triathlon that is in the open water, then I suggest getting comfortable in those conditions and swimming in the ocean, lake, etc. Make sure you grab a buddy though before heading out :)
